Many years ago, while driving through the heartland of Nevada, I took a winding dirt road out to the middle of nowhere and came upon a strange and mesmerizing outcropping of rock. There was nothing else like it anywhere around so I sketched it and told myself I would paint this. Well, over twenty years have gone by and finally, through the faded lines of memory, I put down on canvas what I remembered of this magical piece of earth that so captured my attention.

This all relative to individual, all subject to impulse, and all manipulated by thought. The bee becomes the flower, the stone an ocean, or the sky an impenetrable kaleidoscope of shifting reflections. These are the rites of incision; they are the cutting away of the outer layers of prescribed conformity. When I paint, I paint with my heart.
